For the last couple of hours, I debated posting this. I feel like normally I blog about things like personal reflections and what’s up with my life, but I felt compelled to write a reflection on my favorite meal this week. And then I realized that this is my blog and I can write whatever I want. So I am going to give you all of the reasons that breakfast is the best meal ever. Living in a dorm for the past 9 months has deprived me of the availability of good breakfast food. I can’t just wake up on Saturday morning and make myself eggs and bacon, I have to walk across the street to the dining hall where they serve eggs that originally were some weird powder mixture. No thanks. Yet my faith in breakfast still stands strong, so I would like to share with you why breakfast is the best of the three square meals.
1. It’s the most important meal of the day.
Yeah, we’ve all heard it, but it’s true. Starting your day off with breakfast leads to increased energy and concentration. Studies have also shown that it helps maintain body weight (I’m talking about you, freshman 15) and that you are more likely to eat healthy throughout the day than if you hadn’t eaten breakfast.
2. Eggs are so versatile.
Eggs are just one of those foods you can have a million different ways and never get sick of. They also make a great base for something like an omelette or quiche, to which you can add so many different ingredients.
Everyone loves bacon. Even vegetarians.
4. Breakfast is good any time of day.
You can eat it at 6 am or 6 pm or at 3 am when you’ve got the drunchies and it still will taste as wonderful as if your mom had made it on a Saturday morning.
5. It’s easy to make.
You can be an awful cook and still be able to whip up some scrambled eggs. Or you can just make them in the microwave. There’s a ton of great breakfast options that you can just heat up in the microwave if you’re pressed for time. Also, cereal is like the easiest thing to make of all time.
6. It instantly makes your day better.
I can’t think of a time where I had a bad day after a good breakfast. Breakfast allows you to start the day off on a strong note, and everything else just seems to find its way into place after that.
7. It’s a good source of nutrients.
When done right, you’re getting a lot of necessary nutrients like protein, fat, and carbs. It’s also really easy to add things to whatever breakfast you choose like fruit and veggies to get a little more of the good stuff.
8. It leaves room for creativity.
Banana chocolate chip pancakes? Eggs with Sriracha? The possibilities are seemingly endless when you decide to be creative with your breakfast foods. You can even add your own twist to a simple bowl of cereal by adding banana slices or whatever you do so choose.
One could argue that brunch is its own meal in itself, but I beg to differ. You eat breakfast food, so it’s kind of breakfast, right? Brunch is the best because you don’t have to commit to getting up early yet you still get to enjoy all your favorite breakfast foods. It’s also a great social opportunity because nobody is ever going to turn down brunch.
10. Sometimes, it’s just dessert.
Don’t try and tell me that donuts are healthy. Or cinnamon rolls, for that matter. Sometimes, you just need a sweet treat to start your day off on the right foot.
If looking at breakfast pictures was considered an acceptable hobby, it would definitely be at the top of my list. Actually it’s pretty embarrassing how much time I spend looking at food on Instagram. But that’s another story. So there you have it. If you’re not convinced that breakfast is the best meal ever, you’re entitled to your own wrong opinion.
